Artist Statement
My current practice explores ideas of femininity and self, often in relation to the heavily curated reality in which we exist. The figures within my paintings are often removed from a wider setting, deliberately creating an ambiguity in which the female form can be presented and viewed outside of conventional paradigms. Existing somewhere between muse and protagonist, the women I paint are fictional explorations of the contradictions that underpin how women are represented and view themselves. Within these explorations, I use a physical and meditative painting process to situate my own feelings within this dialogue.
Bio Lucie Rose Matthews (b. 1994) is a contemporary figurative painter based in Manchester, UK. She graduated with a first-class fine art degree in 2020 and has shown work in a number of exhibitions in both Manchester and London.
